Nicki Minaj: “Stupid Hoe”

Nicki Minaj has dropped the new video for her song “Stupid Hoe”. The eccentric rapper/pop star spent the past few days teasing her video, promising fans something extraordinary enough that it could not be aired on normal television. “Can’t premiere on a network b/c its important that my art is not tampered with, or compromised prior to you viewing it for the 1st time,” she tweeted.

The spot features, for the most part, Nicki shooting lyrics – apparently dissing Lil Kim – while booty-dancing, writhing in a cage and wearing all sorts of different makeup. Her colorful ensembles, doll-like facial expressions, transformation into a large predator cat and shrinking to Alice in Wonderland heights again are the main ‘creative’ items the video is composed of. By now you’d expect artists would find more unique ideas to stand out in today’s music market.

Not Nicki Minaj. When it came to coming up with a concept for her new video, she decided to take inspiration from the mainstream favourite; “mind control” symbology.

The dramatic almond-shaped eyes transforming her into a doll-like creature.

The Egyptian Goddess pose.

Of course, the always popular sex-kitten transformation combined with the cage.

And last but not least the ever present reference to Alice in Wonderland.

So, what’s new here? Well, nothing much. It’s again a video packed with dark “MK-ultra style” symbology that seems to be the necessary ingredients for modern mainstream music videos.

What is clever about the video however is that – as a helpful reminder – the video also flashes, incessantly, the message that Minaj will be performing at next month’s Super Bowl.

Here’s the video: Nicki Minaj – “Stupid Hoe”.

I always get the idea from Nicki that she is desperately trying to be ‘one of them’, but never really manages to live up to that level.

Great to see an intelligent commentary on this symbolism — often the music biz conspiracy stuff takes a sensationalist bent, and it’s really creepy enough on it’s own! The imagery and quotes speak for themselves.

For example, check out this quick video of Nicki Manaj describing her alter ego, Roman, as “a crazy boy who lives in me and says the things that i don’t want to say. He was born just a few months ago. I think he was born out of rage. He was conceieved in rage. So he bashes everyone. He threatens to beat people and he’s violent.”

“I ask him to leave. But he can’t. He’s here for a reason. People have brought him out. People conjured him up and now he won’t leave.”

…the interviewer just treats her like it’s a normal thing to say! This is at worst a description of demonic possession, at best the description of a deeply psychologically fragmented person.

But apparently, if you’re a pop star, this can help your career!
Just look at Beyonce’s “Sasha Fierce.”

    I could go on! :)
